Does the pay schedule change what you pay?
No. The table above is one annual figure divided four ways. Being paid weekly rather than monthly does not change the tax, because income tax is settled on the year, not on the cheque. What it changes is the size of each cheque and how often it arrives.
Withholding is where the belief comes from. Payroll works out each cheque as though every cheque that year will be the same size, so an irregular month can have too much or too little taken off. That is a timing difference, and the return settles it.
Why some months have three paychecks
Every two weeks is not the same as twice a month. Twice a month is 24 cheques, two in every month, always. Every two weeks is 26 cheques across twelve months, which does not divide evenly, so two months a year collect a third one. Each cheque is smaller than a semi-monthly cheque on the same salary; the two extra are not a bonus, they are the rest of the same money.
There is a case the round number hides. 26 is the usual count, but a year whose first payday lands on 1 January fits twenty seven in, and then three months collect a third cheque and every cheque is slightly smaller than this page shows. This page divides by 26, which is the standard assumption and right in most years rather than all of them.
What this does not include
- Local or city income tax, which fifteen states allow
- Dependants, children, and credits that have to be claimed on a return
- Post-tax deductions, such as health insurance premiums
- Anything on a W-4 beyond filing status
- Head of household and married filing separately, which are not modelled
- Bonuses and commission, which payroll withholds at its own flat rate
Federal figures are the 2026 tables published by the IRS. State figures are read at each state's own revenue department and cited on that state's page.
